What do Termites look like?

There are more than 3,000 different species of termites with over 40 species in Sri Lanka alone. Although they have different characteristics, most of them look similar. They are typically between 4 to 15 millimeters long and have soft bodies with straight antennae. The queens and kings are quite larger, capable of growing up to 3 centimeters long. Their colors vary from white to light orange or brown where the worker termites are lighter in color while swarming termites are darker. Flying termites which are reproductives have two pairs of small wings.

Method of Treatment

Pre-Installed Chemical Recharging System (Advanced Anti-Termite Reticulation System)

This specialized system consists of a network of chemical resistant, Polyethylene (LLDPE) tubes with ‘Pressure compensated’ chemical emitters on the tube at a constant spacing. These fluid emitters discharge anti-termite chemicals into the soil, making a uniform chemical barrier against the termite access points. The tubes are installed underneath the ground floor slab along the vulnerable construction joints, expansion gaps, outer perimeter, and inner perimeter of the entire building. The recharging outlets are placed in suitable areas for easy recharge.

           The system is recommended to be recharged every 4-5 years to sustain the chemical efficiency levels and to maintain the protection against subterranean termites throughout the economic life of the building. This system is the most realistic and eco-friendly alternative after the total ban of long-lasting Organo- Chlorine Termiticides such as DDT, Aldrin and Dieldrin. Offering 10 year warranty for a short life chemical such as a Bifenthrin is far from reality as its effectiveness remains maximum for about five years under tropical environmental conditions.

Liquid Barrier Treatment

• Drilling will be done along the wall joints of the tiled/cemented/concreted and terrazzo floor with 3-5 feet intervals. Then the termiticides will be injected into the soil underneath the floor slab using pressure injection.
• Drilling will be done along the exterior walls with 3-5 feet intervals and termiticides will be injected into the soil, to create an effective chemical barrier along the foundation.

Termite Bait Stations

The Ant-Termite Baiting System includes above-ground or In-Ground components that utilize special bait designed to attract termites.
Termite bait contains the most advanced insect growth regulator which provides fast elimination of subterranean termite infestations. It is easy to install, works without having to drill and is eco-friendly.
The bait attracts termites to the bait stations to feed even more when there are other alternative foodstuffs on the premises. The special ingredient in the termite bait is then taken back to the nest and spread throughout the colony before taking effect. This affects the Queen and the King which is the heart of the colony.
